Olmstead and his wife, Anna May, decided that the school needed a marching band. Of course, there was only one problem: Olmstead didn't know how to play any instruments. So he bought the instructional books for all the instruments and proceeded to teach the students, staying one lesson ahead.
Anna May, who was considered some to be a risqué woman because she taught piano and accordion, joined in the effort, providing the accompaniment for the family vaudeville act, featuring Ray, Robert, and their two daughters, Anna May Jr. and Delight, walking the wire while playing multiple instruments and juggling.
