The 2009 National Senior Games Celebration of Athletes ceremony on August 8, 2009 commemorated the true spirit of senior athletes competing in 25 events events from August 1st to the 15th at Stanford and other Bay Area locations. To kick off the ceremony, Mickey Thomas of Starship, along with the Oakland Interfaith Gospel, premiered the new theme song, “Long Live the Challenge”, in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The song was written by e2k’s Peter and Tahra Degree with lyrics by Michael Olmstead. The show featured an inspirational Parade of Flags and special athletes, including 100 year old Jim Gentlihomme. The event also featured appearances by Hall of Fame quarterback, Steve Young; former Stanford woman’s basketball star, Jennifer Azzi, Olympic decathlon champion, Bruce Jenner, and the world’s oldest Olympian, Alex Tarics. The show included performances by Tony-award winning trumeteer, Jeff Lynn, rock juggler, Chris Bliss; and a moving patriotic medley featuring a talented cast of young performers. The ceremony concluded with the arrival of the first solar powered torch carried by high jump legend, Dick Fosbury. The torch and cauldron, also created by e2k and the design team at IDEO, represent the first, solar-powered, non-fuel burning torch used by any major sporting event.
