Hip-Hop & Cello

As part of his Culture in Action project, YoYo Ma joined local youth artists to offer a free block party in downtown Oakland. Sponsored by the XQ Institute as part of their mission to transform high schools in America, the event attracted a diverse audience to experience a unique juxtaposition of classical music and hip hop. Local acts included the Jax Band, Sol Development, Ajai Kasim and Nick Reeves. Neighborhood restaurants provided free sandwiches, jerk chicken, ice cream and other goodies. With very little advanced warning, e2k transformed the street into a concert venue, creating a positive event for a great cause.
